What Are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are thin, custom-made porcelain restorations that cover the front surface of a tooth. They’re designed to disguise dental imperfections and create a more attractive smile. Because porcelain closely mimics natural enamel, including the “wet” translucence of teeth, veneers blend seamlessly and can totally transform the appearance of your smile.  They’re perfect for many kinds of cosmetic dental issues, including:

  • Misaligned or crooked teeth
  • Tooth gaps
  • Unusually shaped teeth
  • Permanent stains
  • Chips and cracks

What Are Dental Laminates?

Dental laminates function similarly to veneers but are even thinner, requiring minimal to no enamel removal. They’re excellent for patients who want a more conservative or reversible cosmetic treatment that still produces brilliant results.

If you want to correct minor chips, cracks, or discoloration without altering the enamel of your natural teeth, dental laminates could be the perfect solution.

The Process of Getting Veneers

Getting veneers begins with a thorough consultation, where Dr. Michelle or Dr. Glenn will discuss your goals, including which cosmetic issues you’d like to improve. Once a treatment plan is set, a small amount of enamel is gently removed from each treated tooth to create space and ensure a natural fit.

Next, impressions are taken and sent to a trusted dental laboratory, where your new veneers are fabricated by skilled dental technicians. Before you leave, we’ll bond temporary veneers over your teeth to protect them and give you a preview of what your smile could look like.

At your next visit, each veneer is bonded securely in place. Our team will make minor adjustments as needed to ensure your bite feels comfortable and your smile looks flawless.

For laminates, the process is similar, but enamel removal is minimal or sometimes unnecessary.

Benefits of Veneers

Both veneers and dental laminates offer powerful cosmetic benefits that can dramatically transform and elevate your smile. With proper care, they provide long-lasting aesthetics and protection for your teeth. Benefits include:

  • Natural-Looking: Veneers and laminates use materials that are color-matched to your smile, so no one will be able to tell you’ve had them placed.
  • Stain-Resistant: Porcelain and, to a lesser degree, composite materials resist staining and acids, keeping your smile bright longer.
  • Treat Multiple Flaws: With one treatment, you can correct decades of cosmetic damage and discoloration.
  • Durable Materials: Veneers can last 15 years or longer, while laminates usually last around a decade if well cared for.
  • Improved Aesthetics: Improved smile symmetry and brightness for lasting confidence.

Veneers FAQs

Are Veneers Permanent?

Veneers will eventually have to be replaced, so they cannot be called truly permanent, but they can last for up to fifteen years or more if they receive excellent care. However, the process used to place veneers involves removing a small amount of enamel that will not grow back, which means it will be necessary for the treated teeth to wear veneers from then on for protection against infection and injury. The team at Taylor Dental Care will be happy to help you understand the best ways to keep your teeth and veneers in great shape during the consultation process.

Is There Anything I Can’t Eat with Veneers?

After we prepare your teeth to receive veneers and take bite impressions, we’ll fit you with a set of temporary veneers so you can get used to wearing them. These temporary appliances will not be as durable or stain-resistant as your final veneers, so it’s best to avoid chewy, crunchy, or sticky foods that can break them or pull them loose as well as richly colored foods and drinks that can cause discoloration.

Once you receive your final veneers, you can enjoy whatever foods and beverages you like. However, it’s important to be mindful when chewing so you don’t put undue stress on your appliances. If you experience dental sensitivity after receiving veneers, it’s best to avoid items that are especially hot or cold until your teeth adjust. While you can drink alcohol, it’s best to do so sparingly since the acid it contains can erode the cement holding your veneers in place.

Do Veneers Give You a Lisp?

Receiving veneers can significantly alter the dimensions of your teeth as well as how vibrating air moves around them when you speak, and this can give some people a temporary lisp. This issue should go away on its own as the patient gets more practice speaking with their veneers, but you can probably accelerate the process by singing a fun song or reading a favorite book out loud while pausing to repeat any difficult words until you get the hang of them. If the lisp is unusually persistent, we may be able to fix it at our Sandy office by adjusting your appliances.

Can You Whiten Veneers?

Whitening treatments cannot affect veneers since they are not made from natural enamel, so receiving teeth whitening after getting veneers can leave your smile with an uneven coloration. If you wish to whiten your teeth and receive veneers, it’s usually best to whiten first so your appliances can be shaded to match your smile’s beautiful new color.
