Dental Veneers And Laminates

If You Are Considering Porcelain Veneers, Here Are Some Simple Facts You Should Know

Are you one of the many men and women trying to improve your smile by concealing teeth that have become stained, chipped, or discolored? Porcelain veneers as offered by Drs. Glenn and Michelle Taylor at Taylor Dental Care have been improving smiles with great success. The team at Taylor Dental Care would love to tell you more about this treatment that can help conceal many of the superficial tooth defects that prevent you from having the smile you truly desire.

Porcelain Veneers – What Are They?

Porcelain veneers are very thin shells applied to the front of a tooth to hide certain imperfections. These thin coverings are bonded onto the side of the tooth, which is visible and can be used to conceal a wide range of issues. Some of these issues a porcelain veneer can hide include:

  • Spaces between teeth
  • Discoloration
  • Minor chips and cracks
  • Misshapen teeth

The versatility of porcelain veneers is one reason they have increased in popularity among more than just the rich and famous in recent years.

Choose Porcelain

Over the years, veneers have been produced using several materials. Drs. Glenn and Michelle Taylor believe porcelain is the gold standard for veneers. There are several reasons for this. First, porcelain is one of the more stain-resistant materials available for use in dentistry. Porcelain is also very durable and can closely resemble the shade and sheen of a natural tooth. Porcelain’s ability to mimic the natural light-reflecting properties of a natural tooth is another reason this material is so popular for use in veneers. The result of veneers is always to restore your tooth without it looking like it has been restored.

Who Makes a Good Candidate for Porcelain Veneers?

The first factor to look at when considering who will make a good candidate for porcelain veneers is the state of one’s oral health. Healthy teeth and gums are a must. Before receiving veneers, your dentist will examine your teeth and gums to determine the state of your oral health. If you have signs of tooth decay or gum disease, these will be treated before receiving veneers.

Any suitable candidate will also need to have an appropriate amount of healthy tooth enamel. That is because a very thin layer of enamel will need to be removed before applying the veneer.

Potential candidates who suffer from bruxism may not be deemed suitable because you could break your veneers if you are constantly clenching or grinding your teeth. If you suffer from these or other dental concerns, your dentist will likely want to address these before looking into cosmetic dental options such as veneers.

Receiving Your Veneers

Once you have been considered a suitable candidate for porcelain veneers, a small amount of enamel will be shaved off the tooth (or teeth). Then your dentist will need to take physical molds or digital images of your teeth to send off to a lab where the veneers are created. Once your veneers arrive, minor adjustments may be made if needed and then they will be carefully placed and cemented to the tooth.

Once your veneers are in place, caring for them is straightforward. Brush and floss like you would your natural teeth and avoid chewing on hard food or objects. Continue to visit your dentist regularly for cleanings and exams, during which they will monitor the state of your veneer. For an appointment with Drs.
