Candidates for Gum Contouring

Gum Contouring And Reshaping Sandy, UT

People who suffer from a gummy-looking smile may benefit from gum contouring. Excess gum tissue covering the teeth can make them look smaller. Gum contouring, also known as crown lengthening or gum reshaping, is a cosmetic procedure that removes such tissue and shapes the gumline. This not only improves the look of someone’s smile, but it also improves oral health because it reduces the areas where bacteria build up and get trapped.

Appropriate candidates

In general, a good candidate for this procedure is anyone who has gum issues that make them unhappy with their smile. Someone may be bothered with how small the teeth look or by how uneven the gumline is. Examples of what situations improve with reshaping include:

  • A mouth that has more gum tissue than teeth formation
  • Teeth that appear too short or boxy
  • Irregular gum-to-tooth ratio

Good candidates can want more than just cosmetic work for appearance's sake. Gum contouring is also an effective treatment for those who have had issues with gum disease or oral infections caused by excess bacteria that hides beneath the gum tissue.

Gum contouring procedure and recovery

To determine if someone is a good candidate, a visit with a dentist is recommended. During a consultation, the dentist can discuss the patient’s concerns as well as goals. After an examination, the dentist may recommend gum contouring for the desired results.

At the beginning of the appointment, the teeth and gums are thoroughly cleaned and dried. The dentist then uses a scalpel or a laser to cut away gum tissue and shape it to the perfect, even form. The dentist works conservatively, only taking off the tissue necessary to meet the patient’s goals. Afterwards, the mouth is cleaned again. In most situations, only one office visit is required for the procedure.

Recovery time and expectations

Patients may experience some tenderness and swelling after the procedure, which is normal. The severity depends on the type of tools the dentist used during the contouring process. If a scalpel was used, the client will also need sutures. The discomfort typically goes away after one to three weeks once the gums have healed. Swelling and discomfort can be managed by applying ice packs to the face for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. An anti-inflammatory, such as ibuprofen, is also effective.

The gums will be more sensitive, so there are some food restrictions during recovery. For the first few days, people are usually more comfortable sticking to a diet made up of soft foods, such as soup, yogurt, pudding, smoothies and ice cream.

Regular oral care is necessary for long-term dental health. However, during the recovery phase, gentle brushing and an antibiotic rinse is recommended.

For people looking for a minimally invasive way to improve their smile, gum contouring may be the answer. It removes extra tissue to even the gumline and place more of an emphasis on the teeth.
