How Is a Tooth Prepared for a CEREC® Crown?

CEREC crowns Sandy, UT

If you need to have one or more CEREC crowns placed, you might be wondering how this will be done. Your tooth will be prepared in much the same way as with a traditional crown. This allows the crown to fit properly. Read on to learn more about this process.

Tooth preparation

There are many reasons why a patient might be getting a crown. The reason for the crown will determine how the tooth is prepared. For example, if the patient is getting a crown for cosmetic reasons, the tooth may only need to be cleaned. However, if there is severe decay in the area, then the tooth might need a root canal treatment.

In many cases, the tooth will be cleaned so that no bacteria get trapped under that crown. First, the dentist will place a numbing gel over the tooth before proceeding. Any decay will be removed then. The second step is to shape the tooth.

This involves using dental tools to file down the tooth. This allows the crown to fit without being too bulky. The finished result will be that the tooth is the same size as it was before. Then the dentist will use a computerized system to take impressions of the patient’s teeth.

It is often recommended for about 1.5 mm of the tooth to be removed. If enough tooth is not removed, then the restoration can fail. The CEREC crowns must be thick enough to withstand the pressures of chewing. This will prevent the crown from cracking.

Placing the crown

The patient can sit back and relax for a few minutes while the machine creates the digital model. Soon, the machine will have carved out the crown. The dentist can place the crown on the tooth to check for the right fit. There may need to be some small adjustments that the dentist can do.

The patient will not need to wear a temporary crown when doing the CEREC crowns process. Instead, the permanent crown is ready on the same day. Once the crown is ready for usage, the dentist will use dental cement to put the crown there. After getting the crown, the patient should follow all of the dentist’s instructions.

This will help the recovery period to go by quickly. Sometimes, patients may notice a bit of sensitivity after getting a dental crown. The good news is that the patient can use over-the-counter pain relievers to alleviate this problem. Both swelling and pain can be treated by this method.

Visit a dentist for CEREC crowns

If you need a dental cap for your teeth, then CEREC crowns may be a good option for you. Your tooth will be prepared the same way as if you were getting a traditional crown. The difference is that you do not need to have a temporary crown put into place. Making an appointment at your dentist will allow you to experience the benefits of CEREC crowns.
